History of DADA
The intent behind this piece was to outline the Dadaism art movement from start to end in a style that is representative of Dadaism. I began this project by researching milestones in Dadaism and identifying which artists and artwork should be featured in the collage. Tristan Tzara is the main focus of the piece because of his involvement in the movement, Hugo Ball was the official founder so he is added throughout the piece. Marcel Duchamp's 1917 Fountain is featured repeatedly in the background. While Duchamp is noted in history books as being the creator of The Fountain, many believe that he stole the idea from Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven. Due to this controversy, I added her in the bottom left corner with strings coming through her head to demonstrate that as a woman in the Dada movement, her ideas were overlooked and stolen. Pages from the Dada Manifesto are also featured in the background. My color, typeface, and texture choices are all inspired by Dada advertisements and books.
